Canggu vs Seminyak: Which Is the Better Base?

Canggu or Seminyak? Airport distance, villa prices, swimming, surf, food and nightlife compared with this site's own data, and who should pick which.

Canggu and Seminyak sit on the same stretch of Bali’s south-west coast, and a few kilometres of congested road separate them. They are built for different trips, though. This page puts the two side by side using the data this site already holds: road distances, a villa price snapshot, and the beach pages we have sourced one by one. For the whole island, see where to stay in Bali.

The short answer

Our where to stay guide says it plainly: Seminyak is the more comfortable base and Canggu is the more interesting one. Seminyak gives you restaurants, spas and shops inside a short walk, so it works without a scooter. Canggu is spread along the coast and works properly only if you will ride, but it has the surf, the cafes and the coworking. Neither has water you can casually swim in.

The rest of this page puts figures behind that sentence.

The villa figures come from a snapshot dated 2026-09-14 for 3 nights and 2 adults, priced in US dollars for check-in on 24 October 2026. Only listings that returned a price are counted in the medians. Treat them as a comparison between the two areas, not a quote.

Getting to the airport

Seminyak is the nearer of the two by a wide margin. Measured on OpenStreetMap roads, Double Six is 11 km from Ngurah Rai airport and Petitenget 11.5 km. Canggu starts at 19.5 km (Berawa) and runs to 22.4 km at Echo Beach.

Palms against a cloudy sunset over Seminyak

The kilometres understate the gap, because Canggu’s access roads clog. Our where to stay guide gives Seminyak 30 to 45 minutes and Canggu 45 minutes to over an hour. If you land late on a long flight, or leave on an early one, that difference is real. We have not found a sourced, dated figure for how long the road between the two areas takes, so we give none; allow extra at the end of the afternoon in either.

Villa prices

Canggu is the cheaper place for a villa. In the snapshot, the median priced villa was US$135.43 a night in Canggu and US$165.62 in Seminyak, a gap of about US$30. The top end differs more: a quarter of Seminyak’s priced villas cost US$298.86 or more, against US$224.18 in Canggu.

Canggu also has more of them, 2313 villa listings against 1894. Hotel rooms reverse the order, with a median of US$49.14 in Canggu and US$39.14 in Seminyak, so if you want a room and not a villa, Seminyak is the cheaper of the two. To compare actual properties, start from Bali villas.

Swimming, surf and sunset

Both are west-facing, so both give you a sunset. The sand and the sea differ.

The dark sand and shorebreak of Canggu beach

Seminyak’s beach runs about 3 km from Double Six to Petitenget over soft, gently sloping sand, and the waves break over sand, which suits beginner and intermediate surfers. Lifeguards and flags are mainly at Double Six and Petitenget. Read Seminyak Beach and Double Six Beach before you go in. Between them and Canggu, Batu Belig Beach is quieter but has no permanent lifeguard on most of it, so stay out of the water.

Canggu’s beaches have dark sand and are better for surfing than swimming. Batu Bolong is the busiest beginner surf beach, with a sea temple beside it, and Echo Beach, a short way north, has sunset bars. The sea can pull hard at Batu Bolong; see Pura Batu Bolong for what happened there in May 2025. Away from the beach, Canggu’s rice fields are the thing Seminyak does not have, though they are shrinking.

Food, nightlife and getting around

Seminyak has the widest food choice on this coast. A warung meal costs about Rp 30,000 to 60,000 and a restaurant main course Rp 100,000 to 300,000, with tax and service added almost everywhere. Boutiques and spas are on Jalan Laksmana and Jalan Petitenget, and the beach clubs and beanbag bars along the sand are the evening. Most of that crowd has left the beach by 19:00 or 20:00, so Seminyak’s nightlife is more beach club and restaurant than late club scene. Double Six, the beach, is named after a nightclub that closed in 2011. We hold no sourced, dated closing-time rules for either area, so check venues locally.

The main pool and thatched bar at Finns Beach Club on the sand at Canggu

Canggu is built around cafes. Many are made for laptops, with plugs at the tables and wifi, and a dish at Fine by Satu Satu costs IDR 50,000 to IDR 90,000. The beach clubs are free to enter, with minimum spends only for loungers and daybeds, and Atlas has a nightclub on the same site. More on both in the Canggu things to do and Seminyak things to do pages.

Getting around is the real divide. In Seminyak you can walk from the shops to the beach. In Canggu you need two wheels, a bicycle for the fields, or a ride.

Choose Canggu if / choose Seminyak if

Choose Canggu if:

  • you surf, or want to learn, and want the beach in front of your cafe;
  • you work remotely and want plugs, wifi and a table all day;
  • you want the cheaper villa, with the lowest quartile starting at US$87.67;
  • you will ride a scooter or bicycle and do not mind a longer airport run.

Choose Seminyak if:

  • you want restaurants, spas and boutiques on foot, without a scooter;
  • you want the shorter transfer, with the airport 11 to 11.5 km away;
  • you want a beach with lifeguards and flags, used carefully;
  • you would rather pay more for a villa and have more services close by.
