A shortlist rather than a catalogue: what each tour runs to, who it fits, and what the price leaves out.

Ubud sells two very different days. One is the driver day: eight to ten hours in an air-conditioned car looping the rice terraces, a water temple, a waterfall and a swing, with the guide doing the queuing and the parking. The other is the two-hour adrenaline slot, which here means an ATV through tunnels and paddy.

Almost every Ubud listing calls itself private, and for once the label is honest: these are private cars with a driver-guide, not coaches. That changes what you are comparing. The question is not group versus private, it is what the price covers once you are in the car.

Private or shared in Ubud

In Ubud the private option is usually the cheaper one, because a private car with a driver costs less here than a seat on an organised coach elsewhere. The ATV trips are the exception: those run in shared batches with a maximum group size, which is what keeps them at the price they are.

What lands on the bill later

Entrance fees at the terraces, water temples and waterfalls are charged separately unless the listing says all-inclusive.
Lunch is excluded on most full-day loops, and the stop is usually at a restaurant chosen by the operator.
The ATV operators take a locker and towel deposit in cash on arrival, and sell photos and video separately.
Jungle swing sessions are a per-person fee at the site on several of these itineraries.

Our verdict

If you book one thing in Ubud, make it a private driver day and pay the extra for the all-inclusive version. The saving on the cheaper listings is real, but it is handed straight back at the ticket booths, and the day is better spent looking at the terraces than counting out rupiah at every gate.
