Amed sells one thing, and it sells it seriously: diving on the calm east coast, with the USAT Liberty wreck at Tulamben a short drive up the road and reachable from the beach rather than by boat.

That focus shows in the prices. This is the only region on the site where the shortlist runs from a single afternoon to a four-day certification, and where the cheapest option is not the one most people should book.

Private or shared in Amed

Dive groups here are small by regulation and by practice, usually four to ten, and the ratio matters more than the label: a shared dive with a ceiling of six is a better experience than a private tour with a guide watching the clock. Private is worth paying for on the wreck, where a guide who knows the entry points saves half the dive.

What lands on the bill later

Accommodation is excluded from every course listing, though several operators run their own bungalows next to the dive centre.
Digital photos and video are sold on top on every operator here.
Food and drink at the dive centre is not included unless the listing says so.
Certification cards carry a separate agency fee on some courses.

Our verdict

Come to Amed to dive or do not come for the tours at all. If you have never dived, the introductory day on the Liberty is one of the best value first dives anywhere in Indonesia. If you are certified, buy the multi-dive package rather than single dives: the per-dive price falls sharply and the wreck deserves more than one visit.
