Private or shared in Nusa Penida

On land, private is the sensible default: the roads are steep and rough, and a driver who knows them is the difference between four viewpoints and two. On the water it is the opposite, because the boats are shared by design and the group ceiling is what tells you how crowded the snorkel stop will be.

What lands on the bill later

Photo fees at the viewpoints are real and are charged on the spot. One operator lists the Diamond Beach bird's nest and swing at about six US dollars each.
Parking at the viewpoints costs a few thousand rupiah per stop, and local guardians collect a small entrance donation.
The boat from Sanur is usually separate from an on-island tour unless the listing says otherwise.
Crossings are cancelled in rough seas, most often between November and March. Do not book a same-day onward flight.

Our verdict

One coast, done without hurrying, beats both coasts seen through a car window. Take the west circuit if this is your first visit, add the manta boat if you swim, and treat any itinerary promising the whole island in a day as a promise about driving rather than about seeing.
