Plan Your Trip

Is Bali Expensive?

Is Bali cheap or expensive? Sourced 2025 to 2026 prices for meals, beer, scooters, drivers, SIM cards and entry fees, and three sample days added up in rupiah.

Bali is cheap or expensive depending on five choices: where you fly from, where you sleep, how you eat, how you get around and whether you spend your evenings at beach clubs. This page gives sourced prices for each in rupiah, then adds up three sample days. For a plan built around a small budget, see Bali on a Budget; this page is about what things cost and why the bill swings so much.

Rupiah figures come first because that is what you are quoted. Dollar figures appear only where a source gives them. Where two sources disagree we show the range and say so.

The short answer

Day to day, Bali is cheap by Western standards. One guide published on 31 May 2026 puts budget travellers at 400,000 to 650,000 rupiah a day and mid-range travellers at 1.1 million to 2.1 million rupiah, both including a bed. It says luxury starts at 4.8 million rupiah. That is a spread of more than 10 to 1 between the cheapest and dearest trip, and it is wider than in most places.

What does not shrink is the cost of arriving. The same guide puts flights at $150 round trip from within Southeast Asia and $600 to $1,200 from Europe or North America. For a 7 day trip with no flights it estimates 5.7 million to 8.9 million rupiah for a backpacker and 11.3 million to 22.7 million rupiah for a mid-range traveller. Another 2026 guide notes that the weak rupiah, trading around 17,900 to the US dollar in mid-2026, stretches foreign money further.

Fees you pay whatever you choose

Some costs are fixed by the government or the site, and they are the most reliable numbers on this page.

  • The Bali tourist levy is Rp 150,000 per person, paid once per trip, which our levy page converts to US$8.46 at the European Central Bank rate of 17 September 2026. It is on top of the visa on arrival, whose fee our visa page does not state, so confirm it officially.
  • Monkey Forest charges foreign adults Rp 130,000.
  • Tanah Lot charges foreign adults Rp 75,000. A rise to Rp 100,000 was postponed in March 2026.
  • Uluwatu Temple charges foreign adults Rp 60,000, and the Kecak dance is a separate Rp 150,000.
  • Tegallalang rice terraces charge Rp 25,000, plus donations on the paths.
  • Waterbom Bali charges adults Rp 630,000 for a day pass.

Entry fees therefore run from Rp 25,000 to Rp 630,000. A temple a day adds up, but a water park is the budget line that matters.

Food and drink

Food is where Bali is cheapest and where the gap between local and imported is widest.

A warung plate of nasi campur is Rp 25,000 to 45,000 according to a 31 May 2026 guide. A December 2025 guide is lower for the simplest dishes: mie ayam around 15,000 rupiah and nasi goreng or mie goreng around Rp 20,000. A cafe dish in Canggu or Seminyak is Rp 60,000 to 120,000 per an October 2026 guide, and a mid-range restaurant dinner with a drink is Rp 200,000 to 350,000 per the May 2026 guide.

Coffee follows the same split. The December 2025 guide gives a latte at a coffee shop at about 35,000 rupiah, against 15,000 rupiah from Alfamart. A smoothie bowl plus coffee at a popular Canggu or Ubud cafe is Rp 120,000 to 180,000 in the May 2026 guide.

Alcohol is the exception to cheap food. A June 2026 guide says alcohol carries a heavy import tax, so cocktails cost far more than the food around them. The December 2025 guide lists a can of beer in a restaurant at Rp 30,000 and a cocktail in a bar at Rp 90,000 to 150,000. Upscale places add a charge on top: the October 2026 guide says restaurants and beach clubs add a tax and service charge of 15 to 21 per cent, often in small print at the bottom of the menu.

Getting around

Scooter hire is Rp 60,000 to 90,000 a day in the May 2026 guide, which says fuel adds little. A June 2026 guide gives $5 to $7. Both warn that you need a proper licence and riding experience, and the May guide adds that travel insurance can be void without one.

Ride-hailing is cheap for short hops in the south. The October 2026 guide puts a Grab or Gojek car at Rp 30,000 to 80,000 for most trips within one area and a motorbike at Rp 10,000 to 30,000. The December 2025 guide expects about Rp 10,000 per kilometre by motorbike and 15,000 rupiah by car. It also says local taxi groups discourage the apps in some places, so fares can be higher there. Our getting around page covers the options.

A driver for the day is the first big step up. The December 2025 guide gives 500,000 to 700,000 rupiah, and the May 2026 guide gives Rp 600,000 to 850,000 including fuel, for the whole car and not per person. The two ranges overlap but do not agree, so budget 500,000 to 850,000 rupiah. For arrivals, our airport transfers page lists fixed car fares: Rp 70,000 to 150,000 to Kuta and Rp 350,000 to 450,000 to Ubud.

Where you sleep, and the SIM and massage

Accommodation is the largest single swing. Our Bali villas page uses Agoda rates for 24 to 27 October 2026, checked on 14 September 2026. Across the areas with enough villas for a median, a villa ran from $48 a night in Kintamani to $166 in Seminyak. The same page lists Ubud at $87, and hotel medians from $22 in Kuta to $68 in Uluwatu. A villa and a hotel room are not the same thing, and the page explains how to compare them.

Two small costs are worth a line each. A tourist SIM card was about Rp 50,000 in the December 2025 guide, with a month of data at Rp 100,000 to 120,000, and it warns that airport prices can be 400,000 rupiah or more. A 2026 SIM guide lists Telkomsel at Rp 150,000 to 300,000 for 10 to 25 GB, so the sources differ, and airport counters sit at the top. A 60 minute Balinese massage at a mid-range spa is about Rp 200,000 in the October 2026 guide, our only source for it.

Three sample days, added up

These days add sourced prices and leave out the room, flights and the one-off Rp 150,000 levy. Each uses the lowest or highest figure in the range, as stated.

Budget day, lowest figures. 3 warung meals at Rp 25,000 each, a coffee shop latte at 35,000, a can of restaurant beer at 30,000 and scooter hire at 60,000. 75,000 + 35,000 + 30,000 + 60,000 = 200,000 rupiah.

Mid-range day, lowest figures for the driver and dinner. A cafe breakfast at 120,000, a warung lunch at 45,000, a dinner with a drink at 200,000, a driver at 600,000 and Uluwatu Temple at 60,000 plus the Kecak at 150,000. 120,000 + 45,000 + 200,000 + 600,000 + 60,000 + 150,000 = 1,175,000 rupiah.

Higher day, highest figures. A cafe breakfast at 180,000, a driver at 850,000, a Waterbom adult pass at 630,000, a dinner at 350,000 and 2 cocktails at 150,000 each. 180,000 + 850,000 + 630,000 + 350,000 + 300,000 = 2,310,000 rupiah.

The gap between the first and third day is a factor of more than 11, and nearly all of it comes from the driver, the water park and the dinner. If you split the car, the driver cost falls with each person. Add a room from the villa and hotel figures above to complete the day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bali expensive?+

Not for food, scooters, guesthouses and local transport, and yes for beach clubs, imported alcohol and private villas in the south. A warung meal costs Rp 25,000 to 45,000, while a mid-range restaurant dinner with a drink is Rp 200,000 to 350,000 (dmcquote, 31 May 2026). The same island supports both bills, so the answer depends on your choices.

Is Bali cheap?+

Day to day, yes, if you eat at warungs and avoid the tourist strip. One 2026 guide puts the budget traveller at 400,000 to 650,000 rupiah a day including a bed. The Bali on a Budget page on this site gives a similar range. Flights, the Rp 150,000 tourist levy and entry fees are the costs that do not shrink.

How much does a trip to Bali cost?+

Excluding international flights, one 2026 guide estimates a 7 day trip at 5.7 million to 8.9 million rupiah for a backpacker and 11.3 million to 22.7 million rupiah for a mid-range traveller, with luxury well above that. Flights are extra: $150 round trip from within Southeast Asia, $600 to $1,200 from Europe or North America, per the same source.

How much is a private driver in Bali per day?+

Two sources put a full day for the whole car at 500,000 to 700,000 rupiah (December 2025) and Rp 600,000 to 850,000 (May 2026). The car is shared, so for two to four people it works out far cheaper per head than it sounds. Fuel is included in the higher figure.

Is Bali cheaper than it used to be for foreigners?+

The weak rupiah helps. One June 2026 guide says the rupiah was trading around 17,900 to the US dollar, and another in September 2026 assumes 15,500 to 16,500, so check the live rate. Taxes still apply: the Rp 150,000 levy and entry fees such as Tanah Lot and the Monkey Forest are added costs.

How much does a beer cost in Bali?+

One December 2025 guide lists a can of beer in a restaurant at Rp 30,000 and a cocktail in a bar at Rp 90,000 to 150,000, and guesses more in Canggu and Seminyak clubs. Alcohol carries a heavy import tax, which is why drinks cost far more than the food around them.
