- The beaches are not good for casual swimming: a visitor died off Batu Bolong in May 2025, believed dragged by the current. Many beach and gate payments are cash only.
Canggu is a stretch of dark-sand beaches, surf breaks and cafes where rice fields still sit between the villas.
Canggu is used for a long coastal strip north of Seminyak, running from Berawa past Batu Bolong and Echo Beach to Pererenan and Cemagi. The beaches have dark sand and are better for surfing than swimming. Batu Bolong is the busiest beginner surf beach, with a sea temple at one end, and Echo Beach has sunset bars. Inland, the cafes double as workplaces, and the paddies that remain are protected in places but shrinking. Tanah Lot, the famous sea temple, is not in Canggu but a drive up the coast.

01 Surf lessonLearn to surf at Batu Bolong beach
Batu Bolong and Echo Beach offer gentle morning waves and soft sand bottoms, which is why schools and board rental stands line the beach in front of the sea temple. Lessons are usually a two hour session, and most packages include a board, a rashguard and water. Most schools run beginner lessons before ten in the morning, when the wind is calmer. The beach is Canggu's best-known spot for beginners and still the most popular beach in Canggu in a 2025 roundup, so expect company in the water.
Group lessons typically cost IDR 150,000 to IDR 400,000 a session; board hire alone IDR 50,000 to IDR 100,000; on the beach at the sea end of Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong.
Tip. Book the early slot, and in the wet season check conditions first: the dry season from May to October gives the cleanest mornings.

Pura Batu Bolong
Pura Batu Bolong stands at the sea end of Canggu's busiest beach. To most visitors it is the backdrop to surf lessons and sunset drinks, but to Balinese Hindus it is a Kahyangan Jagat, a temple for the whole island, where the sacred objects of other temples are brought to be purified. Fresh water comes out of the holed rock in the sea that gives the temple its name. Temple dress is required in the grounds, and this is not the arch temple of the same name at Tanah Lot.
Cost: No ticket for the beach; parking about Rp 5,000 for a motorbike and Rp 10,000 for a car. Time: 20 to 30 minutes for the temple, longer with the beach and sunset
Tip. Come in late afternoon for sunset, and check the Balinese calendar first: ceremony days and the Melasti processions before Nyepi fill the temple.

03 Rice fieldsCanggu rice fields and the shortcut
Canggu has no ticketed rice-field attraction, only the paddies left between the villas. The best-known stretch is the shortcut between Batu Bolong and Berawa, a narrow lane that is also a one-way road for cars. For larger fields go north: Pererenan has broad paddies behind the beach, and Cemagi and Kedungu are farming villages with subak channels. The fields change from flooded to green to stubble through the rice cycle, so what you see depends on the month. Farmland here is under pressure from villas.
Cost: Free; a farmer may occasionally ask a few thousand rupiah to cross their land. Time: 20 minutes for the shortcut; 1 to 2 hours for Pererenan and the lanes north
Tip. Go between 06:30 and 08:00, or in the hour before sunset, and bring a light as many lanes are unlit after dark.

04 Sea templeTanah Lot day trip
Tanah Lot is a sea temple on a rock 20 to 30 metres off the coast, about 13 km from Canggu, across the regency border in Tabanan. The ticket buys a managed coastal park, not entry to the temple: non-Hindus cannot enter the shrines on the rock at any tide. At low water you can walk to its base for a freshwater spring and a short blessing. A second sea temple on a natural arch, Pura Batu Bolong, is on the same ticket.
Cost: Rp 75,000 for a foreign adult, Rp 40,000 for a child; parking Rp 3,000 to 10,000; cash only. Time: 1 to 2 hours, longer if you stay for sunset or the Kecak
Tip. Read the tide, not the day: the crossing is possible for roughly two hours either side of low water, and Grab and Gojek generally cannot pick up, so plan the ride home.

Echo Beach and sunset bars
Echo Beach is one of the better beaches on this coast, with dark sand and a stretch of sunset bars and restaurants along it. The beach is better for watching the surf than for swimming. La Brisa, in the middle of the beach, charges no entry for the pool and bar areas, and runs a Sunday market. Pura Batu Mejan, one of Canggu's two old beach temples, is also here.

Canggu beach clubs
Canggu's beach clubs range from the all-day party at Finns Beach Club to the smaller, quieter Lawn at the end of central Batu Bolong. Atlas Beach Fest bills itself as the biggest beach club in the world, with a nightclub on the same site. General entry to the pools and bars is free at all of these, and you only commit to a minimum spend if you want a lounger or a daybed.
Free general entry at Finns, Atlas, La Brisa and The Lawn; minimum spends run from IDR 700,000 for a La Brisa beanbag to IDR 5,000,000 for a Finns party lagoon bed.
Tip. Skip the daybed if you only want a swim and a drink; and expect crowds and higher drink prices on party nights.
- Cafe culture
Canggu cafes and co-working
Many Canggu cafes are built for laptops, with plugs at the tables, fast wifi and air-conditioned work rooms. Fine by Satu Satu at the far end of Batu Bolong roasts Balinese beans in-house, and Merch Cafe Amsterdam in Pererenan has a separate workspace. Most cafes are happy for you to stay all day if you keep ordering.
Most dishes at Fine by Satu Satu cost IDR 50,000 to IDR 90,000; the Merch Cafe workspace has a minimum spend of IDR 100,000.
Tip. Arrive when it is quiet to get a table with a plug; not every table has one.

A few things that make Canggu smoother, and keep the trip easy.
Do not swim casually
The sea at Batu Bolong can pull hard, and the beach has had a drowning and, in 2022, a contamination finding. Swim only when it is calm and near other people.
Surf early
Most schools run beginner lessons before ten in the morning, when the wind is calmer.
Plan the Tanah Lot ride home
Grab and Gojek can drop you at Tanah Lot but generally cannot pick up, and the return to Seminyak or Kuta often takes one to two hours.
Carry cash
Tanah Lot's gate is cash only, with no ATM on site, and Batu Bolong parking is paid in small notes.
