Where to stay in Canggu

Batu Bolong is the busy heart of Canggu, built around a beach with a forgiving surf break and a main road packed with cafes, surf shops and bars. It is the most walkable part of the area, with a lot of food, coffee and shopping within a short distance. The beach draws surfers and sunset crowds to the clubs on the sand. The trade-off is heavy scooter traffic on the narrow shortcut roads and a scene that can feel crowded in peak months.

Berawa sits east of Batu Bolong towards Seminyak and has filled with beach clubs, gyms, restaurants and newer villa complexes. It is home to some of Canggu's largest beach clubs and a broad, grey-sand beach popular at sunset. The area suits travellers who want polished venues and modern accommodation, though it relies more on scooters and cars than walking. Building work is ongoing in parts, a sign of how fast the area has grown.

Echo Beach and neighbouring Pererenan lie at the western edge of Canggu, where the built-up strip gives way to rice fields and a rockier, surf-focused shore. The pace is slower than Batu Bolong, with a growing set of cafes and villas but more open space between them. Echo Beach has a well-known reef break and a line of casual beachfront eateries. It suits travellers who want Canggu's food and surf without being in the thick of the crowds.

West of Pererenan the coast opens out towards Tanah Lot, the sea temple set on a rock offshore, with a scatter of larger resorts and a clifftop golf course nearby. It is quieter and greener than Canggu proper, better suited to a relaxed resort stay than a walkable town base. Tanah Lot itself is one of Bali's most visited temples, at its best around sunset. Reaching Canggu's cafes and Seminyak's dining means a drive rather than a walk.
