Canggu’s rice fields are threaded through the neighbourhoods rather than set apart, a patchwork of working paddies that has held on between the villas, cafes and surf shops. They give the area much of its character, a green counterweight to the traffic and construction, and the narrow farm paths that cross them have become part of daily life for residents and visitors alike. Farmers still flood, plant and harvest these plots on the subak cycle, so the colour shifts through the year from bright green to gold to bare earth.
Where to find them
There is no single entrance. The paddies are spread through Berawa, Batu Bolong and Echo Beach, threaded by lanes and access paths. The best known is the Canggu Shortcut, a narrow road that cuts across the fields and links the main areas, lined in places with cafes that look out over the crops. Away from the road, farm paths run between the plots to quieter corners where the only sounds are ducks and irrigation water. Walk or cycle to reach them, as cars struggle on the narrow lanes.
Cafes and swings
The edges of the fields have filled with cafes that trade on the view, serving coffee, smoothie bowls and Indonesian dishes from terraces above the paddies. A few have added swings and photo platforms for a small fee. They make pleasant places to rest after a walk, but the quieter interior paths give a truer sense of the working landscape. Expect Canggu prices here, not village rates.
Walking and cycling
The paths are flat and easy, suited to a gentle walk or a slow bicycle ride, and bikes are for hire around the area. They can be narrow and rough, so go slowly and give way to farmers and scooters. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times, cooler over the open ground and softer in the light for photographs. Keep to the paths to protect the crops.
How to visit
The fields are reachable on foot or by scooter from anywhere in central Canggu and Berawa, with no fixed opening times. Combine a morning walk through the paddies with breakfast at a rice-field cafe, then head down to the coast at Pura Batu Bolong and its beach.
