Batu Belig marks the northern end of the Seminyak coast, where the crowds of the main strip thin out and the shoreline runs on toward Berawa and Canggu. This is a working beach as much as a leisure one. Fishing boats sit drawn up on the grey volcanic sand, and a string of casual warungs feed the villas set back behind the dunes. The wide beach and open western horizon make it a reliable place to watch the sun drop into the Indian Ocean, without the density of the clubs further south.
The beach
The sand here is the same dark volcanic grey that runs along Bali’s southwest coast, broad at low tide and narrower when the water pushes in. The surf carries a shore break and occasional rips, so swimmers should stay cautious and check conditions at a warung before going in. Surfers use the beach for access to nearby breaks, and it is common to see boards heading out in the late afternoon. Dogs, joggers and local families share the sand toward evening.
Warungs and beach bars
What Batu Belig lacks in polish it makes up for in easygoing warungs. Simple bamboo bars and seafood grills line the top of the beach, renting sunbeds and umbrellas for a modest fee that is often folded into a food order. They serve Indonesian staples, fresh fish and cold Bintang, and many stay open past sunset with fairy lights and low tables on the sand. The atmosphere is relaxed and prices are well below those of the large clubs.
Sunset and the coast walk
Sunset is what most people come for, when the flat horizon turns orange and the tide pools mirror the sky. At low water you can walk north across the Batu Belig river, using the footbridge when the tide is high, and continue along the sand toward Berawa. The walk links a chain of beaches and takes around half an hour each way, a pleasant way to reach Canggu on foot.
How to visit
Batu Belig is about ten minutes north of central Seminyak by scooter or Grab, with parking near the beach entrance.
