Sanur is a relaxed beach town on Bali's south-east coast, an older resort area known for its calm, reef-protected water, a long seafront path and a gentle pace that suits families and returning visitors. Where you stay comes down to which stretch of the boardwalk you want and how close to the boat harbour for the Nusa islands. The northern end of Sanur, up towards the Bali Beach area, is the calmest stretch of the seafront, with older resorts, spacious grounds and a quieter run of the beachside path. It suits travellers who want to walk the boardwalk and swim in the sheltered water away from the busier centre. Dining is more spread out here, so some walking or a short ride into the centre is needed for the widest choice. Sunrise over the water is a fixture of a Sanur stay.

Central Sanur

Convenient and central

First-time visitors wanting shops and restaurants on foot

Central Sanur runs along Jalan Danau Tamblingan, the town's main street of restaurants, cafes, shops and spas set a block back from the beach path. It is the most convenient base, putting dining and the seafront within an easy walk and a broad range of hotels close by. The beach here is calm and reef-protected, good for swimming and family days. It is the busiest part of Sanur, though still gentle compared with Kuta or Seminyak.

Beach and boat access

The southern end of Sanur around Mertasari sits closest to the fast-boat harbours for Nusa Penida, Lembongan and Ceningan, making it the practical base for island trips. Mertasari Beach is one of the wider, quieter stretches of sand, popular for kite-flying and weekend picnics. Accommodation ranges from villas to resorts, with a calmer feel than the centre. It is a short ride from the main dining strip, so some travel is needed for the fullest choice of restaurants.

Type of stay

Garden resort or a small hotel on the strip

Sanur's accommodation is older than Bali's west coast, and it shows in a good way. Along the sea are low-rise garden resorts, several of them decades old, with mature trees, large grounds and direct access to the beach path. Inland along Jalan Danau Tamblingan are smaller hotels, guesthouses and villas at a fraction of the rate, a few minutes' walk from the same sand.

Choose a garden resort if

  • You want the beach path and the sea directly outside
  • Grounds, shade and a large pool matter
  • You are travelling with children who need space
  • A quiet, low-rise setting is the point of choosing Sanur
  • You would rather not walk to breakfast

Choose a small hotel or villa if

  • A five-minute walk to the beach is no hardship

  • You are using Sanur as a base rather than a resort

Sanur's beachfront is unusually democratic: the path runs the whole way and everyone uses it, so a hotel three streets back is not cut off from the sea the way it would be elsewhere.

How long to stay

Matching a base to your trip

Sanur is a base as much as a destination, so how long you stay depends on what you are doing from it.

Two or three nights

Fine as a first or last stop. The airport is close, the pace is gentle and the beach path fills a morning.

Four to six nights

Works well with the islands. Sanur plus a day or two on Lembongan or Penida is one of the easier weeks in Bali.

A week or more

Sanur suits a long, slow stay better than most of the south, particularly with children or on a return visit. Ubud and the east coast are both comfortable day trips.

Safety

Is it safe, and where to take care

Sanur is among the calmest places to stay in Bali and the risks are correspondingly small. The ones that exist are about water and roads rather than crime.

The lagoon and the tide

The reef makes the water calm and shallow, which is the point, but at low tide it becomes very shallow and the reef flat is sharp underfoot. Reef shoes are worth packing.

Boats and the channel

Fast boats and traditional craft use the same water. Swim inside the marked areas rather than out towards the channel.

The beach path

Shared by walkers, cyclists and the occasional scooter, and busiest at sunrise. Nothing dangerous, but worth expecting.

Roads after dark

Tamblingan is narrow, with patchy pavement and parked cars, so walking in the road for stretches is normal. Be visible at night.

Ordinary precautions

Petty theft is uncommon here but not unknown. Use the safe and lock ground-floor doors, the same as anywhere.

Getting around

From the airport, and around town

Sanur's position is one of its strongest arguments: close to the airport, close to the island boats and out of the west-coast traffic.

From the airport

Around twenty to thirty minutes, and far less exposed to the west-coast jams than Seminyak or Canggu. That makes early flights and late landings much easier.

The island boats

Fast boats to Nusa Lembongan, Ceningan and Penida leave from Sanur, with the harbour at the southern end. Morning departures are the calmer crossings.

On foot and by bike

The seafront path runs for kilometres and is the nicest way to move around. Bicycles are widely available and genuinely useful here, which is rare in Bali.

To Ubud and the east

Ubud is roughly an hour and the east coast beaches a similar run, and both avoid the worst of the southern traffic from this side of the island.

Beachfront means the path

A beachfront room in Sanur usually faces the public path, which is busy at sunrise. It is a feature rather than a fault, but worth knowing.

Low tide

The lagoon empties a long way out at low tide. If swimming from the beach every day matters, check where the property sits along the reef and look up the tide times.

Older resorts, older rooms

Several of the best-located places are decades old. Some have been refurbished and some have not, so recent reviews beat the gallery.

Distance to Tamblingan

The difference between eating out every night and ordering in is often two hundred metres. Check the walk to the strip, not just to the sea.

Harbour transfers

If you have an early boat, ask whether the property arranges the transfer. The southern end saves you a groggy taxi ride.

Ground-floor garden rooms

Popular for the space and the price, and the ones to check for damp and mosquitoes in the wet months.

Is Sanur a good place to stay in Bali?

For families, returning visitors and anyone who wants calm water and a slow pace, yes. It has a long beachfront path, protected swimming and a short airport run. It is not the place for surf, nightlife or a young scene, which is exactly why people choose it.

Which part of Sanur is best?

Central Sanur for a first visit, since the restaurants, shops and beach are all walkable. North Sanur is quieter and greener, and the south is closest to the boats for Nusa Penida and Lembongan.

Is Sanur good for families?

It is one of the better choices in Bali. The reef keeps the water shallow and calm, the beach path is flat and safe for small children and bicycles, and the resorts tend to have grounds rather than just a pool.

Can you swim at Sanur beach?

Yes, and it is far calmer than the west coast because of the reef. The catch is the tide: at low water the lagoon becomes very shallow and the reef flat is sharp, so timing matters more than at a surf beach.

How far is Sanur from the airport?
