Sanur is a coastal strip east of Denpasar, about a 30-minute drive from Ngurah Rai airport. Its beach faces east across a lagoon sheltered by a coral reef, so people come for sunrise and gentle water rather than surf. A paved, car-free path runs along the shore, and Sanur Harbour in the north is where most fast boats to Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida depart. Sanur Beach faces east, so the sun comes up directly over the water, with fishing boats on the lagoon and, on a clear morning, Mount Agung in the distance. The offshore reef keeps the waves small, which suits children, less confident swimmers and paddleboarders. It is not a surf beach, and cloud can hide the sunrise in the rainy season, so check the forecast the evening before.

02 Seafront walkSanur Beach Walk
The Beach Walk is a flat, paved path with no motor vehicles, running about 5 km from Matahari Terbit in the north to Mertasari in the south. Warungs, benches and public toilets line it, and fishing boats sit on the lagoon beside it. Walk it for a morning, or hire a bicycle for a shorter ride; pedestrians share the surface, so ride gently.
Cost: Free; bicycle hire is quoted at Rp 20,000 to Rp 40,000 a day, and one hotel guide gives Rp 50,000. Time: A morning on foot for the whole path of about 5 km, or a shorter ride by bicycle

03 Island boatsBoats to Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida
Most fast boats to the islands leave from Sanur Harbour on Jalan Pantai Matahari Terbit, not from the open sand. The crossing to Nusa Lembongan takes 30 to 40 minutes and to Nusa Penida 35 to 45 minutes. Operators advise arriving at least 45 minutes before departure. Prices, timetables and cancellation terms differ by operator, season and weather, so confirm yours when you book.

04 Quiet sandMertasari Beach
Mertasari is the quiet southern end of Sanur: shallow, lagoon-like water behind the reef, local families and a large car park. There are no beach clubs. From May to September it is a kitesurfing and foiling spot, with the steadiest wind from June to August. There are no lifeguards, so stay aware if you are not a strong swimmer.
Cost: Free to enter; parking Rp 2,000 for a scooter and Rp 5,000 for a car (January 2026 guide). Time: A short swim and walk, or an afternoon if you add kitesurfing or watch the kite flying

05 EveningSindhu Night Market
Sindhu Night Market is Sanur's evening stop. A 2026 hotel guide gives its hours as 6pm to 10pm, so it works as dinner after a day on the sand or a boat trip. The Sindhu Art Market and Batu Sindhu Pier are also on the promenade.

06 On the waterPaddleboards and snorkelling
