The short answer

Stay in Jungutbatu on a first visit. It is the main village and the boat landing, with most of the rooms, food and dive shops. Choose Mushroom Bay for a quieter cove with clearer water and beachfront resorts, and the Ceningan side across the Yellow Bridge for the slowest, most rustic pace, with a scooter to get about. Getting here takes a drive to Sanur and a fast boat of 30 to 45 minutes.

Nusa Lembongan is the smallest and most developed of the three Nusa islands off Bali's south-east coast, an easygoing island of surf breaks, snorkelling and mangroves linked to neighbouring Ceningan by a narrow yellow bridge. It is compact enough to cross in a short ride, so where you stay is a matter of which beach and pace suit you. Jungutbatu is the main village and boat landing, Mushroom Bay is a quieter cove of small resorts, and the Ceningan side near the bridge is the most laid-back.

Jungutbatu is the island's main settlement, strung along a beach that serves as the primary landing for the fast boats from Sanur. It has the widest choice of guesthouses, warungs and dive shops, and a long beachfront good for sunset views back towards Bali and Mount Agung. Surf breaks lie just offshore, and seaweed farming still goes on at the southern end. It is the most convenient and social base, though the beach doubles as a working harbour and can be busy with boat traffic.

Mushroom Bay is a small, sheltered cove south of Jungutbatu, named for the mushroom coral offshore, with clearer water for swimming and snorkelling than the main village beach. It has a cluster of small resorts and beachfront restaurants and a more relaxed feel, though day-trip boats do pull in during the day. It suits travellers who want a prettier swimming beach and a quieter base while staying within a short ride of the village. Access is by a hilly road or by boat around the headland.

Ceningan side and the Yellow Bridge

Rustic and low-key

Travellers wanting the most laid-back, low-key stay

The south of Lembongan around the Yellow Bridge, and neighbouring Nusa Ceningan across it, is the quietest and most rustic part of the island group. Stays here are simple guesthouses and small villas among the seaweed farms and mangroves, close to the Devil's Tear blowhole and the Ceningan cliffs and blue lagoon. It suits travellers after a slow pace and fewer crowds, with the bridge, wide enough only for scooters and pedestrians, linking the two islands. Amenities are basic and a scooter is useful for getting around.

Type of stay

Village guesthouse or a villa with a pool

Lembongan runs from backpacker guesthouses at around Rp 250,000 a night to villas with infinity pools looking across the strait to Mount Agung, and most stays cluster around Jungutbatu and Mushroom Bay. Prices are a little higher than on the mainland because most supplies arrive by boat. For 24 to 27 October 2026, Agoda listed 60 villas and 87 hotels and resorts on the island, at a median of about 102 US dollars a night for a villa and about 44 for a hotel room, for two adults.

Choose a guesthouse or small hotel if

Jungutbatu's beach doubles as a working harbour, busy with boat traffic. It is worth picturing before you book a sea view there.

How long to stay

Matching a base to your trip

Lembongan rewards sleeping over rather than day-tripping, because the island goes quiet once the day boats leave.

As a day trip

Possible from Sanur, and day tours cover both Lembongan and Penida by boat. It gives a taste, but the calm pace shows only after the afternoon boats have gone.

One or two nights

Enough for a snorkelling trip, a scooter loop and the crossing to Ceningan. With a boat leg each way, one night feels short.

Three nights or more

Time to surf, take a two or three day dive course, and spend a day on Nusa Penida, about 15 minutes away by boat.

Safety

Is it safe, and where to take care

Lembongan is small and almost traffic-free. The risks are the sea, the reef and the steep lanes.

The crossing

Boats do not run when the sea is rough, and the wet season from November to March brings rougher crossings. Leave a margin before a flight home.

Currents and shore break

Currents around the Nusa islands can be sharp and unpredictable, so snorkel and dive with guided trips. Dream Beach has a heavy shore break, and Devil's Tear is for watching, never swimming, with no railings on the rocks.

Reef surf

The breaks are over sharp coral and suit intermediate and advanced surfers. Coral cuts are the usual hazard, so reef booties and a basic first-aid kit are sensible.

Steep lanes

The lanes are rough and steep, and a helmet is legally required and genuinely useful. On the roads down to the southern beaches, ride carefully or park at the top and walk.

The Yellow Bridge

Narrow, with a weight limit, so scooters cross one or two at a time. An earlier bridge here collapsed in 2016 after being overloaded.

Getting around

From the airport, and around town

Getting to Lembongan takes two legs rather than one transfer: a drive to Sanur, then the boat.

The fast boat

About 30 to 45 minutes from Sanur, at Rp 150,000 to 250,000 (10 to 16 US dollars) each way, with several operators running through the day in the dry season. Book the return in advance, as afternoon boats fill quickly.

Landing

Boats land on the beach rather than at a jetty, so expect to wade the last few metres. Pack in a waterproof bag and wear sandals you can slip off.

On the island

Scooter hire costs Rp 70,000 to 100,000 a day. By scooter or buggy from the main village, Mushroom Bay and the Yellow Bridge are roughly 10 minutes, and Dream Beach and Devil's Tear roughly 15.

To Nusa Penida

About 15 minutes by boat. Basing yourself on Lembongan and day-tripping to Penida is a common plan.

Back to the airport

Sanur has no rail link, so the last leg is by road through the south. Allow time for traffic when connecting to a flight.

ATMs are limited and can run empty, and many smaller warungs and homestays do not take cards. Bring rupiah from the mainland.

Boat and transfers

Ask whether the property arranges the boat and the pickup at the beach. Hotel transfers are excluded from most snorkel trips, and the boat from Sanur is usually separate from any island tour.
