Where to stay in Kintamani

Penelokan sits on the western rim of the Batur caldera, and its name means place to look, a nod to the sweeping view across the volcano and lake below. The rim road holds a line of restaurants and cafes built to take in the panorama, along with a growing set of view-facing hotels. It is the best place to wake up to the caldera without trekking. The rim is cool and can be misty, and reaching the lake or the trailheads means a winding drive down.

Toya Bungkah is the main village on the shore of Lake Batur at the foot of the volcano, and it is the usual base for the pre-dawn Mount Batur sunrise trek. Simple guesthouses and homestays cluster near the lake, along with natural hot springs fed by the volcano where trekkers soak afterwards. Being at the trailhead means a shorter, earlier start than staying elsewhere. Facilities are basic and the choice of dining is limited compared with the rim.

The Kintamani village area and the rim road running north hold a scatter of guesthouses and small hotels among the highland farms and the market town itself. It is a practical base for travellers linking the caldera with sights further north, such as the Ulun Danu Batur temple and the road towards Lovina or the Munduk lakes. The setting is rural and cool, with fewer view-facing restaurants than Penelokan. It suits touring travellers more than those who want to be right on the crater edge.
