The short answer

Stay at Toya Bungkah by the lake if you are doing the Mount Batur sunrise trek: it is the usual trekkers' base, next to the hot springs and the cheapest of the three areas. Choose Penelokan on the crater rim if waking up to the caldera matters more than a short trip to the trailhead, and the Kintamani village area if you are touring on towards Lovina or the Munduk lakes. One or two nights is the usual stay.

Kintamani is a highland district in the north-east of Bali, set around the Batur caldera with its active volcano and crescent lake. The air is cool and the main draw is the Mount Batur sunrise trek, so where you stay is a choice between the crater rim, with its long views, and the lakeside villages below, closer to the trailheads and hot springs. Penelokan on the rim gathers the viewpoint restaurants, while Toya Bungkah by the lake is the usual base for trekkers.

Penelokan sits on the western rim of the Batur caldera, and its name means place to look, a nod to the sweeping view across the volcano and lake below. The rim road holds a line of restaurants and cafes built to take in the panorama, along with a growing set of view-facing hotels. It is the best place to wake up to the caldera without trekking. The rim is cool and can be misty, and reaching the lake or the trailheads means a winding drive down.

Toya Bungkah is the main village on the shore of Lake Batur at the foot of the volcano, and it is the usual base for the pre-dawn Mount Batur sunrise trek. Simple guesthouses and homestays cluster near the lake, along with natural hot springs fed by the volcano where trekkers soak afterwards. Being at the trailhead means a shorter, earlier start than staying elsewhere. Facilities are basic and the choice of dining is limited compared with the rim.

Visitors combining the caldera with north-Bali touring

The Kintamani village area and the rim road running north hold a scatter of guesthouses and small hotels among the highland farms and the market town itself. It is a practical base for travellers linking the caldera with sights further north, such as the Ulun Danu Batur temple and the road towards Lovina or the Munduk lakes. The setting is rural and cool, with fewer view-facing restaurants than Penelokan. It suits touring travellers more than those who want to be right on the crater edge.

Type of stay

Rim hotel or lakeside homestay

Kintamani is not villa country, and the choice is small. On the rim at Penelokan are view-facing hotels and the restaurants built for the panorama. Down by Lake Batur at Toya Bungkah are simple guesthouses and homestays near the trailhead and the hot springs, with basic facilities and little to eat in the evening.

Choose the rim if

Choose the lake if

The stock is thin. On Agoda, checked on 14 September 2026, Kintamani had 29 villas and 69 hotels listed, against more than a thousand villas in Ubud. For 24 to 27 October 2026, two adults, the median priced hotel was about 36 US dollars a night and the median villa about 48.

How long to stay

Matching a base to your trip

Most people give Kintamani a day or a night, and it is built for that.

A day trip

Easiest from Ubud, an hour to ninety minutes away: a caldera viewpoint, the lake and hot springs, a temple and often a coffee plantation. Arrive before midday, since cloud usually gathers over the peak by early afternoon.

One night

The usual reason to stay. Trek pick-ups from Ubud come around two in the morning, and from the southern beaches earlier still, so sleeping near the mountain makes the sunrise far easier.

Two nights

Room for the trek one morning and a slower day by the lake, at the temple or on a downhill cycle the next. Beyond that, most people continue west to Munduk or down to Amed in the east.

Safety

Is it safe, and where to take care

The risks in Kintamani come from the mountain, the cold and the roads, not from crime.

The trek

Mount Batur is an active volcano, and the sunrise route is about two hours up loose, rocky and sometimes steep ground in the dark. Local rules require a licensed guide; confirm the guide is licensed when you book. Sturdy shoes and a head torch are needed.

The cold

The pre-dawn summit can sit near single figures in Celsius even in the dry season. Carry a warm layer, gloves and a windproof jacket; tours list jackets as a personal item.

Mountain roads

The roads wind and climb, morning mist is common and trucks move fast. A scooter is less forgiving here than on the southern lanes, and the road down from the rim to the lake is steep.

Cloud and mist

Mist can hide the view for an entire morning, and cloud and rain are more common in the afternoons and in the wet season. Plan the viewpoints for the morning and drive in daylight where you can.

Temples

A sarong and sash are required at Pura Ulun Danu Batur, usually available at the gate, with modest dress and quiet behaviour around the shrines.

Getting around

From the airport, and around town

Kintamani is further from the airport than Ubud, and the journey usually runs through it.

From the airport and the beaches

Two hours or more by car, through Ubud or the south. There is no useful public transport to the caldera, so it is a private driver, an organised tour, or a scooter for confident riders.

From Ubud

An hour to an hour and a half by car, climbing steadily through villages and terraces. A private driver costs about Rp 600,000 to 900,000 for the day (40 to 60 US dollars).

The road contribution

A long-standing local practice adds Rp 10,000 to 50,000 per vehicle entering the Penelokan area, collected at the roadside. Keep small notes ready.

Rim to lake

Toya Bungkah and the hot springs sit well below the rim, and the drive down and back adds time to any day. From the lakeside you need transport to reach the rim, and the reverse.

Trek pick-ups

Guided treks usually include hotel pick-up, a guide, a torch and a simple breakfast at the top. Some operators exclude far-off areas such as Uluwatu, Amed and Nusa Dua or charge extra to reach them.

With so few properties, a handful of details decide the night.

Ask the property to arrange the trek

Guides can be booked through your accommodation, and a day or two ahead secures a place in high season. Check the guide is licensed and that entrance fees are included.

Hot springs are often extra

Several sunrise listings cover the trek only. If the soak matters, check whether it is included or whether you pay at the springs.

A room that faces the caldera

On the rim, the view is the reason to pay more. Make sure the room you book faces the volcano and the lake, not the road.

Dinner

Dining is limited at Toya Bungkah. If you are staying by the lake, check whether the guesthouse serves an evening meal.

Cash

Card acceptance is patchy away from the larger restaurants. Carry rupiah for the road contribution, temple donations, guides and hot-spring entry.

Season

The dry season from May to October gives the clearest crater views and the most reliable trekking weather.

Where should I stay for the Mount Batur sunrise trek?

Toya Bungkah by Lake Batur is the usual base, at the foot of the volcano and next to the hot springs, so the journey to the start of the climb is the shortest of any base. Penelokan on the rim is the alternative if you want the view and a better choice of food.

Is it worth staying in Kintamani, or should I do the trek from Ubud?

Both work. Treks from Ubud pick up around two in the morning, and from the southern beaches earlier still, which is why some visitors stay a night nearer the mountain. If you are not trekking, Kintamani is an easy day trip from Ubud.

How far is Kintamani from the airport?

For scenery, hot springs and gentle sightseeing, yes, and the cool air is a change from the coast. The pre-dawn trek is better suited to older children and adults. Younger families tend to stick to the viewpoints, a lakeside lunch and the hot springs.

How many nights should I spend in Kintamani?

One or two. A single night makes the sunrise trek easier; a second leaves time for the lake, the temple and the hot springs. Beyond that, most people continue to Munduk to the west or Amed to the east.
