Kintamani is the highland district around the Batur caldera in Bali's volcanic centre, cooler and greener than the coast. The rim viewpoint at Penelokan looks down over Mount Batur and its crater lake, the starting point for the pre-dawn sunrise trek up the volcano. On the lake shore stand hot springs and the water temple of Pura Ulun Danu Batur. Most visitors come for the sunrise climb or the caldera view, often on the way between Ubud and the north.
