Legian Beach is the northern continuation of Kuta’s long sweep of sand, the same golden shore and rolling surf with a calmer feel. It runs between Kuta and Seminyak on Bali’s southwest coast, part of a single unbroken beach that stretches for kilometres. Everything that draws people to Kuta is here too, just with more room and less intensity. Sunbathers, surf schools and evening crowds gathering for the sunset all find their place, backed by the hotels and shops of Legian.
The beach and surf
The sand and the waves are much those of Kuta, a wide beach-break that suits beginners and improving surfers alike. Surf schools work along the shore, hiring out soft boards and running lessons, with the calmer mornings best for learning. Lifeguards patrol the beach and set coloured flags to mark the safer zones, which matters given the shore break and rip currents that strengthen in bigger swells. Stay between the flags and heed the warnings.
A quieter stretch
What sets Legian apart is atmosphere more than appearance. It is less densely packed than central Kuta, which leaves more space to lay a towel or set up a sunbed, and the pace runs a touch slower. Beach bars and warungs line the top of the sand, serving drinks and snacks and facing west for the sunset. It suits visitors who want the Kuta coast without the thickest of the crowds.
Sunset and walking
Like the rest of this shore, Legian faces due west, and sunset is the high point of the day, drawing people onto the sand as the light drops over the ocean. Because the beach is continuous, it is easy to walk south into Kuta or north toward Seminyak along the sand, linking a long stretch of coast on foot. The flat beach makes strolling between the areas simple, particularly at low tide.
How to visit
Legian Beach lies just north of Kuta Beach, a short walk or ride from central Kuta, with access points along the beach road and taxis and Grab easy to find. Late afternoon into sunset is the best time to be here. Walk south along the sand to Kuta Beach for the livelier end of the shore.
