Kuta is Bali's best-known beach resort, where surfing, shopping and partying are the three main events.
Kuta runs along the south coast from the airport towards Legian, and the stretch closest to the airport is properly called Tuban. It was discovered by tourists as a surfing beach, and the wide sand still draws beginners and sunset crowds. Behind it are the Beachwalk mall, the Art Market, Waterbom Bali and the bars of Jalan Legian. It is busy and central, and suits visitors who want convenience and nightlife more than quiet.

01 Sunset beachKuta Beach
Kuta's long sandy beach is one of the best-known in Bali, with a surf scene that still runs most of the year. In the evening people head down to the beach and seaside cafes to watch the sunset. The area in front of McDonald's and the Hard Rock Cafe can be hectic with touts, and the hassle drops as you walk north.
Tip. Walk north along the sand for a calmer place to watch the sun go down.

02 Water parkWaterbom Bali
Waterbom Bali is on Jalan Kartika Plaza, a few minutes from the airport, and has been open since 1993. It has 28 slides and attractions and a Kids Area with no height minimum, while the bigger slides need a rider over 100 cm. Outside food and drink are not allowed, though the park has several restaurants. Check the official site before you go, because it can close on Nyepi.
Cost: Official 2026 day pass: adult Rp 630,000, child (2 to 11) Rp 495,000; discount for KTP, KITAP or KITAS holders. Time: 4 to 6 hours for the main rides; a full day if you add the lazy river and meals

03 Surf and sandLegian Beach and surf lessons
Legian is the Kuta shoreline north of Jalan Melasti, with lifeguard posts, a surf break described as less crowded than Kuta's, and sunset at the end of the day. Booking sites list beginner and intermediate lessons near the Pullman hotel, with boards and rash guards provided. Rip currents are serious here: a British visitor died in one in September 2025.
Cost: Free; loungers, umbrellas and boards are charged by the vendors at daily or hourly rates. Time: A half day
Tip. Swim only between the lifeguards' flags and stay out when the surf is big.

04 ShoppingKuta Beachwalk and the Art Market
Beachwalk is the mall on Jalan Pantai Kuta, opposite the beach, with fixed prices. The Kuta Art Market is a souvenir stop where prices are almost always negotiable and payment is cash only. Allow 2 to 3 hours for the mall and 30 to 60 minutes for the market.
Cost: Free to enter both; parking Rp 2,000 to 5,000 an hour at the mall, Rp 5,000 to 10,000 at the market. Time: 2 to 3 hours for the mall; 30 to 60 minutes for the art market
Tip. Start around half the first price at the market and keep small notes for parking.

Jalan Legian bars and Poppies Lane II
Wikivoyage calls Kuta the rough and ready party zone of Bali. Jalan Legian between Poppies Lane I and II is the main bar and club area, and things tend to get going around midnight. Poppies Lane II is the more laid back place to start the evening. Venues have live cover bands, DJs and tight security, and arak-based house cocktails are known to be strong.
Tip. Use a metered taxi at night and insist that the driver puts the meter on.

Bali Bomb Memorial
The memorial on Jalan Legian remembers the 202 people killed when bombs were detonated on 12 October 2002, on the former site of Paddy's Bar. A ceremony is held there on the anniversary each year. Wikivoyage asks visitors to be calm and silent while viewing it.
Tip. Visit in daylight, before the bars along the street get busy.
