Nusa Dua · Where to stay

Where to stay in Nusa Dua

Tanjung Benoa on the peninsula, the central resort strip, Bualu inland or Sawangan to the south, weighed on beach, price and quiet.

The short answer

Stay in Central Nusa Dua on a first visit, inside the gated resort estate, where the beach promenade, the mall and the calm reef-sheltered water are all close together. Choose Tanjung Benoa for water sports and lower prices, Bualu for a cheaper base with no beachfront, and Sawangan for a quieter southern edge with a more natural beach.

Nusa Dua is a planned resort area on Bali's south-east coast, built in the 1970s and known for calm water behind a reef, wide roads and large beachfront hotels. Where you stay comes down to whether you want the gated beachfront, the water sports on Tanjung Benoa, a cheaper base inland at Bualu, or the quieter southern edge at Sawangan. All four are close to the airport and a long way from Bali's busier west coast.

The best areas in Nusa Dua, in depth

Tanjung Benoa

Busy and watery

Water sports and families wanting a lower price

Tanjung Benoa is the peninsula just north of the resort area, running along Jalan Pratama. It is Bali's water sports hub, with jet skis, banana boats and parasailing offered from the beach. It is more local in feel than the estate, with a mosque and Chinese and Hindu temples close together. Hotels are generally cheaper than in Nusa Dua. Away from the water there is less to do, and the beach is busy with boats. It is 14 km from the airport by road.

Central Nusa Dua

Calm and polished

First-time visitors wanting a calm, easy resort beach

Central Nusa Dua is the ITDC estate, a gated resort area of more than 20 resorts, set up in the 1970s. Everything is planned: wide roads, landscaped grounds, a beach promenade running its full length, Museum Pasifika, the Bali Collection mall and the Water Blow viewpoint. A reef keeps waves small, and the beach is public. It is quiet, with deliberately low-key nightlife, and prices are the highest of the four areas. It is 13 km from the airport by road.

Bualu

Local and practical

Travellers who want a cheaper base and a quick airport run

Bualu is the village on the inland side, west of the resort area, with no beachfront. That is its main appeal: you step outside the resort gates into everyday local life, with small restaurants, local massage places and mid-range hotels that cost less than the estate, alongside a few larger resorts set back from the sea. You will need a short ride to reach the sand. It is a practical base if you plan to spend most days on trips, and it is 12 km from the airport by road, the shortest of the four.

Sawangan

Quiet and natural

Couples and quiet-seekers wanting a more natural beach

Sawangan is the southern edge of Nusa Dua, around Geger beach, a former seaweed farm where the sea is calm. It is quieter than most of Nusa Dua's beaches, with a more natural feel, though the paths down are steep in places and there are fewer places to eat nearby. The water also thins out at low tide, so check the tide before a swim. It is 16 km from the airport by road, the longest of the four.

Type of stay

Inside the resort estate or outside it

The big choice in Nusa Dua is not the room type but which side of the gates you book. The central estate is a planned resort district built in the 1970s, with wide roads, landscaped grounds and large beachfront hotels. Outside it, the area is more ordinary: smaller hotels, local warungs and lower rates, with the beach a short ride away.

Choose the resort estate if

  • You want to walk from your room to the sand
  • Calm, reef-sheltered water for children matters
  • You prefer a quiet, orderly setting with little nightlife
  • You would rather eat at the hotel or at the mall
  • Paying more for a beachfront is acceptable

Choose outside the gates if

  • Value matters more than frontage
  • You want local restaurants and massage places nearby
  • You are happy to take a short ride to the beach
  • You plan to spend most days out on trips
  • A mid-range hotel is enough

The beach is public, so a hotel outside the estate is not cut off from the sea. You can walk the promenade and swim without staying in a resort.

How long to stay

Matching a base to your trip

Nusa Dua works as a resort stay more than as a base for exploring, so the right length depends on whether you want to rest or to go out.

Two or three nights

Fine as a soft landing after a long flight or a calm last stop before flying home. The airport is a short run away and the beach is easy.

Four to six nights

Enough to settle into the beach and the pool, add a day of water sports on Tanjung Benoa and see the sights inside the estate.

A week or more

Best for families and anyone who wants a resort holiday with little planning. You will want day trips to Uluwatu, Jimbaran or Ubud to break it up.

Safety

Is it safe, and where to take care

Nusa Dua is one of the calmest places to stay in Bali. The risks are mostly about water, steps and sensible bargaining rather than crime.

General safety

A guide updated in November 2025 describes the whole area as very safe, gated and patrolled, and one of the calmest places on the island. The usual precautions still apply: use the room safe and keep valuables out of sight.

Swimming and the reef

A coral reef sits offshore, so waves stay small and swimming feels safe on the main beaches. At low tide the water can be very shallow, and at Geger beach it has been described as hardly any water, with seaweed floating in the shallows.

Water sports

Tanjung Benoa has many boats and craft in the water, and most providers will only let you ride a jet ski with an instructor on the back. Check the safety kit and agree the price before you go out.

Steps and steep paths

The path down to Sawangan is steep in places. It keeps the crowds low, but it is a poor choice for anyone with limited mobility or a pushchair.

Beach vendors

Prices quoted on Tanjung Benoa beach can be high, so be ready to negotiate or book activities in advance online.

Getting around

From the airport, and around town

Nusa Dua is at the southern end of the Bali Mandara toll road, which makes the airport run short. The catch is that most other parts of the island are a long way off.

From the airport

Allow 30 to 40 minutes by car, and up to 60 in traffic. The Bali Mandara toll road costs IDR 14,000 for a car, and the toll is fully cashless.

To the other resort areas

Kuta is about 30 to 45 minutes away, Sanur 25 to 45 minutes and Seminyak 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes. Ubud takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours, so it suits a day trip rather than a daily outing.

Inside and outside the estate

The resort zone is walkable, with paved paths linking hotels, beach and shopping. Outside the gates it is much less so, and a scooter or taxi is more useful there.

Between the four areas

Tanjung Benoa lies north of the estate, Bualu inland to the west and Sawangan to the south. Each is a short taxi ride from the others, and none is a sensible walk.

Before you book

What to know before booking accommodation in Nusa Dua

Once you have chosen the area, these are the things that separate one property from another.

Check which side of the gates

Hotels inside the estate and hotels outside it are different stays at different prices. Look at the map before you rely on the name Nusa Dua in a listing.

Public beach, private entrance

Access to the beach remains public even where resorts line it. If you stay outside the estate, check which public way down to the sand is nearest.

Look up the tide

On the calm beaches the water changes with the tide, and seaweed can float in the shallows at low tide. If a daily swim matters, look up the tide times for your dates.

The gates are easy

A guard will ask where you are going. Give your hotel name, or say the beach, the museum or the theatre, and you will be let through.

Season and price

The best weather on this site runs from May to October, which is the dry season. July and August are the peak, with the highest prices and the most visitors.

Recent reviews

Several of the larger hotels are decades old and refurbishment varies. Recent guest reviews are a better guide than the photo gallery.

Good questions

Where to stay in Nusa Dua: FAQ

Where is Nusa Dua in Bali?

Nusa Dua is on Bali's south-east coast, close to the airport. By road it is 12 to 16 km from the terminal depending on the area, and the drive takes 30 to 40 minutes, or up to 60 in traffic.

Which area is best for accommodation in Nusa Dua?

Central Nusa Dua for a first visit, as the beach, promenade and shops are all inside the estate. Tanjung Benoa is better for water sports and value, Bualu for a cheaper base outside the gates, and Sawangan for a quieter southern edge.

Is Tanjung Benoa a good place to stay?

It is a good choice if you want water sports on your doorstep. It is a long peninsula north of the resort area where jet skiing, banana boats and parasailing are the main activity, and hotels there are generally cheaper than in Nusa Dua. There is less to do away from the water.

Where can I find cheap accommodation in Nusa Dua?

Outside the resort gates. Bualu, the inland village, has no beachfront and mostly smaller hotels, and Tanjung Benoa is usually cheaper than the central estate. Resorts, dining and drinks inside the gates cost more.

Which part of Nusa Dua is best for a family resort?

Central Nusa Dua, where a reef offshore keeps waves small and the beach promenade is flat and easy with children. Tanjung Benoa is the livelier option, with more boats and craft in the water.

Are there villas in Nusa Dua?

Yes, though the area is better known for large resorts than for villa clusters. Search each of the four areas separately, and check the walk to the beach and whether the villa is inside the estate, as the answer changes the price and the setting.

Bali villas by area has what a villa costs across the island.

Not sure Nusa Dua is the right base at all? Where to stay in Bali sets all twelve areas against each other, in order of how far they sit from the airport.
