Munduk Waterfall is one of a group of falls in the plantation country around Munduk village, in Buleleng regency. Munduk sits at about 800 metres in the central highlands, and the road in climbs past clove trees, then coffee, then forest where the temperature drops. One guide notes how little of the usual Bali tourist machine there is up here, and the walks to the falls pass through working plantations.
Which waterfall is the Munduk Waterfall?
The name is confusing. An April 2026 guide describes Munduk Waterfall as the fall also signposted Red Coral or Air Terjun Munduk, about 25 metres tall and plunging into a small pool, with enough spray to leave you damp on the viewing rock. An older trekking guide, undated, says Maps.Me labels Red Coral as Munduk Waterfall, and that the Golden Valley Waterfall further along is also correctly labelled Munduk Waterfall. Sources differ, so treat the name as a general label for a cluster of falls.
The trek described in that older guide links four falls: Labuhan Kebo, Melanting (also written Laangan), Red Coral and Golden Valley. Done in full it takes 4 to 8 hours, depending on fitness and whether you skip Labuhan Kebo, which adds about two hours.
The short route: Munduk and Melanting
Most visitors take the short route. Munduk Waterfall and Melanting Waterfall share a trailhead about four minutes by scooter from the village centre. You park at the marked lot, pay Rp 20,000 to enter and walk a path that splits after about 200 metres. The right fork goes to Munduk, and the left to Melanting, about 15 minutes down a stepped path with handrails on the steeper parts. Melanting is wider and you can stand close to the basin, and there is a small warung at the top selling coffee and instant noodles. Both falls together take about two hours.
Fees depend on the guide. The older trekking guide lists Rp 10,000 for Melanting, with half price for children and Rp 2,000 for parking, and Rp 20,000 for Red Coral. It also says you can enter Golden Valley free if you eat or drink at the Golden Valley Eco Cafe in the car park, otherwise Rp 20,000. Sources differ on the fees, and the older guide notes that cards are not taken, so bring small notes.
Swimming, weather and timing
The same guide says you can swim at Red Coral and Golden Valley but not at the other two falls. At Red Coral the spray is heavy and the pool is small, so keep cameras and phones in a dry bag. Golden Valley is the only fall on the trek where the spray is light enough to take a camera without a water-sealed housing.
Rain is frequent. Even in the dry months afternoon showers come through the canopy, so bring a light rain shell. The trekking guide prefers the dry season for the long route, because rain makes the paths slippery and muddy. Nights are cool, about 17 to 19 degrees in the dry season.
Getting there and what to combine
Munduk is 90 minutes to 2 hours by road from Ubud, depending on the guide, and a couple of hours more from the southern beach towns, so many visitors stay a night. There is no Grab or Gojek in the area. Options are a scooter at about Rp 100,000 a day from most homestays, or a private driver at Rp 700,000 to 900,000 for a day from south Bali.
Banyumala Twin Waterfall is 8.5 km away and the natural second stop. Ulun Danu Beratan is about 30 minutes by road from the village, so Ulun Danu Beratan and the Wanagiri viewpoint can be added on the same day.
