Where to stay in Sidemen

Sidemen village on the valley road, Sangkan Gunung higher up the slope, or Tangkup and Wisma Kerta to the south-west, off the main road.

The short answer

Stay in the main Sidemen village group along the valley road, around the Tabola rice fields, on a first visit: most guesthouses and villas are there, and parts of it can be walked. Choose Sangkan Gunung for a base higher up the slope, and Tangkup and Wisma Kerta to the south-west for a rural base off the main road. Plan for at least 2 nights, bring cash and arrange a driver, because the valley has few shops and very little at night.

Sidemen is a quiet agricultural valley in Karangasem, East Bali, with rice terraces, rivers, small villages and views of Mount Agung. It has no beach and very little nightlife, so where you sleep decides most of your stay. The stays cluster in three groups: the main village along the valley road around the Tabola rice fields, Sangkan Gunung higher up the slope, and Tangkup and Wisma Kerta lower down to the south-west.

Sidemen village

Working valley, most choice

First visits and rice-field walks

The main group of stays runs along the road through the valley, around the Tabola rice fields, and holds most of the guesthouses, villas and local warungs. Parts of the village are walkable, and the area around Tabola has some of the most scenic rice field walks in Bali. Because the cafes and the few ATMs are here, it is the easiest group to live in without a scooter. It is also the busiest in the day, when visitors pass through, and quiets down in the evening.

Sangkan Gunung

Up the slope

A higher base up the slope

Sangkan Gunung is the village up the slope to the north-west, at about 465 m against about 280 m in the main village. A higher property can look out over the valley, but views vary from one to the next, so check the photos of the actual room. The cost is the terrain: roads are steep and winding, can be slippery after rain and are poorly lit at night, so a driver or a confident scooter rider matters more here. Check how the last stretch reaches the entrance before you book.

Tangkup and Wisma Kerta

Rural and low-key

A rural base away from the main road

Tangkup and Wisma Kerta are the two villages to the south-west, off the main valley road and the lowest of the three groups, at about 210 m. They suit travellers who want village lanes rather than passing traffic. They are also the nearest of the three groups to the airport by road. The trade-off is distance from the main village's warungs and ATMs, so a driver or scooter matters for meals out.

Type of stay

Homestay or guesthouse versus villa or resort

Sidemen's accommodation runs from small local guesthouses surrounded by rice fields to bamboo villas and mountain-view resorts. Most people spend a lot of time at their property, so the choice matters more here than in a town with a restaurant strip. Many properties are open-air or semi-open-air, so insects, geckos and cooler nights come with the setting.

Choose a homestay or guesthouse if

  • You want a simple room and a short walk to a local warung
  • Value matters more than facilities
  • You like village life and early roosters
  • You are happy to eat out, and to carry cash
  • You will use a driver or scooter for the day trips

Choose a villa or resort if

  • You will eat most evenings where you sleep
  • A pool and a view matter more than a walk to a warung
  • You are travelling with luggage or children
  • You want transfers and cooking classes arranged for you
  • The valley after dark is more than you want to navigate

Because there are few restaurants and little nightlife, a property with its own kitchen or restaurant carries more weight here than the same property would in Ubud. Check the road access before you book: some villas deep in the rice fields can only be reached by scooter or small local roads.

How long to stay

Matching a base to your trip

Sidemen rewards a slow stay, and the day-trippers leave by late afternoon.

One night

Too short. The valley feels different in the early morning and late afternoon once the day-trippers leave, and a single night leaves little time for the rice fields.

2 to 3 nights

The sensible minimum. Time for a rice-field walk, a weaving or silver workshop and one day trip, such as rafting or a waterfall.

A longer stay

Works for a slow stay with a laptop, a yoga week or day trips across East Bali, if you are happy with little nightlife and few shops.

Safety

Is it safe, and where to take care

Sidemen is generally considered very safe for tourists. The risks are about steep roads, slippery paths and scooters rather than crime, as reported in guides from 2026.

Scooters on steep roads

The roads are steep and winding and can become slippery after rain. A July 2026 account calls riding there a gamble without an official licence and good insurance, especially at night, so many visitors hire a driver instead.

The last stretch after dark

The roads around Sidemen are narrow and winding, with very little street lighting. A driver who knows the area makes a big difference on a late arrival.

Rice-field paths after rain

Paths can get muddy and slippery, especially after rain. Walking shoes help, and long socks keep out mud, insects and leeches.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are usually worst around sunrise and sunset, especially near rivers and rice terraces. Bring repellent and cover up at those hours.

Mount Agung

The volcano can be seen from anywhere in the area. There has not been a serious eruption since 2017, but check local news and warnings, and go with a guide if you climb.

Getting around

From the airport, and around town

Sidemen is slow to reach and slow to move around, so settle the transport before you choose the village.

From the airport

Allow 2 to 2.5 hours by car, longer in the afternoon peak, by the coastal route via Goa Lawah. A private driver is IDR 400,000 to 700,000. By road it is about 58 km to the main village group, 56 km to Sangkan Gunung and 51 km to Tangkup and Wisma Kerta.

From Ubud

About 1.5 hours (37 km) to Sidemen, so it is a transfer rather than a day out. Another guide gives 33 km and about an hour.

Driver or scooter

A private driver is the easiest option, particularly with luggage. A scooter is IDR 60,000 to 150,000 a day, but the hills are steep and slippery after rain, and a 155cc machine is advised.

Grab, Gojek and taxis

Availability is very limited, especially around remote villas and mountain roads, and standard taxis are uncommon. There is no reliable public bus or shuttle network in the valley.

Before you book

What to know before booking accommodation in Sidemen

With the village chosen, these separate one property from another.

Check the road in

Some properties can only be reached by scooter or small local roads. Ask whether a standard car can reach the entrance, and whether the host will meet you.

Ask about food

The valley has cafes, warungs and hotel restaurants, but restaurants close fairly early and there are no large supermarkets. If dinner matters, choose a property with a kitchen or a restaurant.

Carry cash

ATMs around the main village are known for running out of cash or going offline. A guide advises carrying at least IDR 200,000 for small warungs, which often prefer cash.

Open-air rooms

Many properties are open-air or semi-open-air. Look for mosquito nets and screens, and expect geckos and cooler nights.

Season and rain

May to October is the drier season. In the wetter months expect mist, cloud and short heavy showers, which can hide Mount Agung.

Arrange a late arrival

If your flight lands late, book the transfer before you travel, as Grab and Gojek become even scarcer at night.

Good questions

Where to stay in Sidemen: FAQ

How many nights should I stay in Sidemen?

At least 2 to 3 nights. The valley feels different in the early morning and late afternoon once the day-trippers leave, and a single night leaves little time for rice-field walks or day trips.

Is Sidemen or Ubud better as a base?

Ubud is better for restaurants, cafes, shops and nightlife. Sidemen is better for quiet, rice fields and Mount Agung views. Sidemen is about 1.5 hours from Ubud, so pick one base rather than commuting.

How far is Sidemen from Ubud?

About 1.5 hours (37 km) by car. One 2026 guide puts it at 33 km and about an hour, so the time depends on the route and the traffic.

How do I get to Sidemen from the airport?

By private driver or hotel transfer, in 2 to 2.5 hours. A private driver is IDR 400,000 to 700,000, and the coastal route via Goa Lawah is usually recommended over the inland mountain roads.

Do I need a scooter in Sidemen?

Not necessarily. A private driver is the easiest option, and Grab and Gojek are very limited. A scooter is IDR 60,000 to 150,000 a day but the roads are steep and slippery after rain, so it suits experienced riders only.

Which area of Sidemen is best for views?

Views depend on the property more than the village: check the photos of the room itself. Sangkan Gunung sits highest, at about 465 m, and the main village group around Tabola is better for walking through the rice fields themselves.

Villas here that had a rate for 24 to 27 October 2026, 3 nights, 2 adults, checked on 7 October 2026 came in at a median of $88 a night. Bali villas by area compares the main bases.
