Lovina · Where to stay

Where to stay in Lovina

Temukus and Kaliasem to the west, Kalibukbuk in the centre, or Anturan to Pemaron in the east, along one coast road.

The short answer

Stay in Kalibukbuk on a first visit, around the dolphin monument and Jalan Binaria, where the restaurants, bars and tour desks are within walking distance and you do not need your own transport. Choose East Lovina (Anturan, Tukadmungga and Pemaron) for a quieter, more spread-out coast with beachfront resorts, and Kaliasem or Temukus at the western end if you want to be away from the centre. All four share one coast road and the same black-sand beach.

Lovina is not one town but a string of villages along a single coast road west of Singaraja on Bali's north coast. Temukus, Kaliasem, Kalibukbuk, Anturan, Tukadmungga and Pemaron run into each other, with Kalibukbuk in the middle as the main hub. The black-sand beach and the calm water are much the same along the whole stretch, so the choice is how far you want to be from the centre. The best time to visit is May to October (dry season).

In depth

The best areas in Lovina, in depth

Temukus

Quiet, western end

Travellers who want to be away from the centre

Temukus is the western end of the Lovina string, the furthest village from Singaraja, around 105 km from the airport by road. Stays here sit by the sea, with the black-sand beach and the same calm water as the rest of the coast. It is the place to choose if you would rather not be near the busiest beach road. The trade-off is distance: restaurants, tour desks and the dolphin monument in Kalibukbuk are a ride away rather than a walk.

Kaliasem

Between quiet and central

A base between the western end and the centre

Kaliasem lies between Temukus and Kalibukbuk, so it is a compromise: you are on the same coast road and the same beach, with the centre close enough to reach without a long trip. It suits travellers who want a little distance from the busiest streets without giving up the centre. As with every village here, the walk to the beach depends on how far down the lane you are. Plan on a short ride or a walk along the road to reach the main restaurants and the dolphin monument.

Kalibukbuk

Centre of Lovina

First-timers who want restaurants and bars on foot

Kalibukbuk is the centre of Lovina and has the most stays. The main beach roads, Jalan Binaria and Jalan Mawar, run to the sea, and the dolphin monument stands nearby. Most of the best restaurants, a cluster of bars and the tour desks are here, and dolphin trips often pick up in this area. Stays are mostly small, budget-friendly hotels and guesthouses. It is the best village if you have no transport, and the busiest, though nightlife is easygoing: live music and cold beers rather than clubs.

East Lovina

Spread out, resort coast

Quiet beachfront resorts and families

East Lovina covers Anturan, Tukadmungga and Pemaron, east of the centre towards Singaraja, around 97 km from the airport by road. The villages are more spread out and have fewer restaurants and shops than Kalibukbuk, but they hold several beachfront resorts and villas, usually at a fraction of south Bali prices. Many hotels have their own restaurant and some run a shuttle into town. It suits families and anyone who wants a quieter coast and is happy to ride into the centre in the evening.

Type of stay

Guesthouse in the centre or a resort on the east coast

Lovina's stays fall into two groups. In Kalibukbuk the majority are small, budget-friendly hotels and local guesthouses on the lanes between the main road and the sea. Further east the villages are more spaced out, and the beachfront is where the larger resorts and villas sit, usually at a fraction of south Bali prices.

Choose a central guesthouse or small hotel if

  • You want restaurants and bars on foot
  • You have no scooter or driver
  • You are travelling on a tight budget
  • You would rather book dolphin and snorkel trips from the street
  • You plan to spend most of the day out of the room

Choose an east-coast resort or villa if

  • A beachfront pool and on-site restaurant matter
  • You want a quieter coast with more space
  • You are travelling with children
  • You are happy to ride or take a shuttle into the centre
  • You want a slow week rather than a lively evening

Because the villages run into each other along one road, the choice is less about a different town and more about how far you want to sit from the beach road in the middle.

How long to stay

Matching a base to your trip

Lovina is far from the airport, so the length of stay decides whether the journey is worth it.

1 night

The minimum if you are making the trip for the dolphins. One guide says a day trip means leaving around 2 a.m., so sleep nearby instead.

2 to 3 nights

Enough for a dolphin trip, the hot springs and a waterfall, with time left to sit on the beach. This is the usual length.

A week

Suits a slow trip with a book and a few day trips across north Bali. One guide suggests a week for anyone after real peace and quiet.

Safety

Is it safe, and where to take care

Lovina is a calm stretch of coast. The points below are about water, the beach and the road rather than crime, and they come from guides dated 2024 to 2026.

Swimming

A December 2025 guide describes the water as generally calm and safe for swimming, with none of the surf of the south. It is not turquoise, but it is fine for a dip or a snorkel.

Litter on the beach

A July 2025 guide notes the beach is not picture-perfect and can be littered, as it can be almost anywhere in Bali.

The sea in the wet season

Rainfall peaks in December and January, though a December 2025 guide says that usually means a mix of sunshine and showers rather than days of rain.

Boat trips

Dolphin boats are small and leave in the dark. Ask whether the boatman keeps to the 25 m distance rule set in 2023, and see the Lovina page for the welfare debate.

Getting around at night

There is no regular bus and the villages are strung along one road, so it is worth agreeing a ride home before you go out to eat.

Getting around

From the airport, and around town

Lovina is about 2 to 4 hours from the airport, and the villages are linked by a single coast road.

From the airport

Roughly 100 km by road, with a private transfer at $38 to $92. A December 2025 guide says 3.5 to 4 hours and a 2026 Traveloka guide says 2 to 2.5, so allow for the longer figure. By road the airport is about 105 km from Temukus and 97 km from East Lovina.

From Ubud

About 2.5 to 3 hours (77 km), usually via Bedugul and Lake Beratan. A shared van is $25 to $44 and the Perama shuttle about $23.

Around Lovina

Wikivoyage, with a May 2024 update, says there is no regular bus from Lovina. Most people use a private driver or a rented scooter, and the roads are quite good and not as crowded as in the south.

Without your own transport

Kalibukbuk is the best fit, as a December 2025 guide says restaurants, shops and spas are in walking distance. In East Lovina several hotels offer a shuttle into town.

Before you book

What to know before booking accommodation in Lovina

With the area chosen, these are the points that separate one property from another.

Check the walk to the beach

Many stays sit on a lane running down to the sea rather than on the sand. Look at the distance to the water as well as the pool.

Ask about dolphin pick-up

Tours leave between 5:30 and 6:00 AM. Most hotels can arrange a boat and pick-up the evening before, so ask when you book.

Restaurants outside the centre

East of Kalibukbuk there are fewer restaurants and shops, so a hotel with its own restaurant is worth more there.

Peak months

Wikivoyage says it can get a little crowded in July and August, and outside that the area is quiet. Book ahead for those two months.

Bring cash

ATMs and minimarkets are in central Kalibukbuk and are less dense than in south Bali, so draw cash there.

Allow for the drive

Lovina is a long way from the south. If you are using it as a stop between Ubud and the airport, build in the transfer time.
